History and Rumors

The forests near Oakhurst surround a massive chasm which local legends and some ancient histories claim was formed when a citadel of a powerful ruler in the early Age of Demigods was destroyed in a powerful attack during the Cleansing Wars of that era which resulted in the entire fortress and its armies being swallowed into the earth.

In one of his several books concerning alchemy and natural philosophy, Gokar the Wise, one of the founders of the University of Wydmoor claimed that Oakhurst (though he gave the location as far to the south in Celstia) was once home to one of the most powerful magical items he had personally witnessed: cursed apples. He wrote that a "magical fruit extrudes forth: a single perfect ruby-red apple ripens at the summer solstice, and a single albino apple ripens at the winter solstice. The midsummer fruit grants vigor, health, and life, while the midwinter fruit steals the same." Gokar credited Hadriarch Edi with helping him realize the source of the evil necromancy magic which was responsible for those apples and they destroyed it. He used it as an example to warn against the danger and poor return of investment from undead and necromancy magic as even the "healing" midsummer apples were spawned from evil vampiric magic which spawned monsters and also led to further deaths as all who were previously healed died when the tree was destroyed. In his later years especially while in his cups Gokar would talk of wanting to organize a heavily armed expedition back to the ruins as he claimed there were other wonders there he would love to study but many dangers. An investigation following the infamous lost senior class of 1453 determined they likely had intentionally used a pre-made teleport circle scroll that Gokar had prepared for such an expedition and none were ever seen again.

In 1515 Oakhurst villagers reported that Kobolds have been actively pushing against Human settlements and demanding increasing tribute of meat and coinage. They claim the kobolds frequently have elemental sorcerers and ever increasing numbers so they have no choice but to pay.
