Flannary: Difference between revisions

Pre-Calamity Flannary was considered the breadbasket of the Mainland, and was a major exporter of grain and meat to many of its neighbors, even their bitter enemy [[Fresia]]. Mass deaths and destruction swept through most of the agriculturally productive lands in the 1400s during the [[Green Flu]] and skirmishes during the [[War of Schism]] and most of those lands remain abandoned and many cases unsafe. This has led to decades of struggles to maintain food enough for its much reduced population which remains concentrated in the 2 main cities, the trade port of ???? and the capital city of Erith, or at least the much smaller cities and towns that exist on the main trade roads between those 2 cities. Those cities mostly thrive on the trade of the Silver Road as it has become the primary trade route between the Western and Eastern nations of the Mainland due to much of the Northern Coastal route being unsafe  due to piracy after the collapse of Alexia. Several non-noble mercantile families have become very rich and powerful over the last few decades.

Flannary is still renowned for the production of elaborately worked luxury goods that are demanded by the exacting nobles and sophisticates across the continent. Within the major cities are a number on industries centered around producing wares from the raw natural resources from Fresia and the Ulan and whatever nearby farm and pasture land has been reclaimed, in some cases combining them with fine ores and gems or mechanisms from Hakan and Gildenhome. These items include, but are not limited to, clothing especially fine leather and furs, crafted goods, and furniture, and to a lesser extent jewelry. These items not particularly well-made or resilient: Flannari luxury goods typically require significantly more care, maintenance, and attention than other goods. Their value comes instead from elaborate and expensive decorations, complicated patterns, and bright colors and dyes used in their construction. Once world renowned for its wines and brandy, many of the old vineyards remain abandoned but pre-Calamity bottles appear frequently at auctions for high price and thriving markets for looting abandoned farm towns for bottles as well as forgeries have developed. Flannari perfumers lay claim to being the first to discover distillation and Erith is home to many producers of fine scented soaps, perfumes and candles, which are prized throughout the world.
