Chance? Meeting

  • Stumble upon a lone halfling
  • Have some chitchat. He seems harmless.
    • Says he's another bounty hunter trying to find a wand of invisibility from undead.
    • Party is initially cagey, but relaxes
    • This turns out to be a mistake, because eventually he drops his facade and morphs into a tall, clear-eyed, white-skinned mofo and teleports away with an explosion that knocks most of the party down.
    • Multi-elemental, Plinking (2d10) ensues while the party drags itself back up. They eventually reassemble and run for it.
    • Party realizes being next to the campfire is a mistake, and scatters towards the dim or dark areas.
      • Party works to collapse the fire's light radius while firing semi-blindly into the woods.
      • Both sides eventually devolve into firing disadvantage-cantrips at each other.
      • Joana feels a strange tingle and disorientation she's read about as being associated with large scale portal or teleportation magic. Neither sounds great, and so the party scrambles to regroup and bug out while.
    • The ensuing chase is a nerve-wracking, front-of-seat affair. (featuring CHASE RULES that the party are becoming familiar with by now)
      • Dire wolf Elian carries Therunin and Joana at different intervals (the gnome getting award for "most cub-like" by being carried in his mouth), Lady Bern runs herself into deep exhaustion, while Whip uses expeditious retreat to run interference.
      • Eventually, the shapeshifter gets whacked in the face by one too many branches and calls it quits and falls back.
