History

The University of Flannary was established after Alexandria's Crusade in 3 BI, shortly before the official inception of the church, with the stated purpose to spread learning, train clerics, and rebuild civilization. It was the first University to be launched after the vast political, religious, and magical changes wrought by Alexandria. It would be so successful in this mission that, within a decade, a second University in Fresia would be established for the same purpose. The University was officially given over to the Flannari Episocpacy in 212 FI, but it continued its wider mission and never became simply a training program for the clergy. From the early days of the University noble houses were expected to employ a large number of religious consultants, tutors, and ministers, and provide host for a large number of elaborate ceremonies on their lands employing many who were educated through religious institutions including up to the the University of Flannary. Flannari noble families were expected to educate their children (and pay tuition) at this university and large noble families would often make sure at least some were trained as professional accountants, clerics, lawyers, scribes, and other educated roles.

By the 16th century it remains a mostly elite, even retrograde, institution. The Chancellor is appointed by the Crown and oversees the elevation of new faculty and also has the theoretical power to dismiss faculty, but the nature of the institution makes indiscriminate use of this power difficult. While officially independent of both the Hadriarch's and Royal Magus's administrative authorities, many (and nearly all of the upper ranks) of Flannary's clerics, wizards, and civil officials were trained there and student groups and fraternities have ties which hold powerful sway even up to the level of the Royal Council.

Colleges

The University of Flannary is divided into 3 major colleges which focus on specific needs of Flannary, providing specialized educated workers for many politically and economically key roles across the nation. Traditionally nobles would attend the same college and program and join the same fraternities and clubs as one of their parents depending on their place in the family succession. Other minor nobility and skilled peasants were instead selected for entry to be trained for a specific career path. Most graduates are not magic-users, but most trained magic-users in Flannary were educated at the University.

  • College d'Argent Plume (Silverquill) - by far the largest college and most represented among the nobles and other connected and powerful people. arcanists and wizards, career clergy, courtiers, diplomats, evangelists, lawyers, poets and modern chroniclers/proto-journalists and other writers, scribes and accountants.
  • College de Prismatique (Prismari) - artists, dancers, designers and crafters of fashion and fine goods, musicians, painters, sculptors.
  • College de Vache (Witherbloom) - alchemists and potion makers, brewers and perfumers and other distillers, chefs and chamberlains and other high-level household staff, healers and anatomists, shippers and agricultural business operations.
