A catch-all term for any number of smaller states created by asserting autonomy from the rule of a larger one. In particular, the political turmoil caused by the Schism resulted in several attempts at autonomy, some of which actually succeeded.
The term itself is used to discredit the value of the kingdoms in question, so its use only has a loose implication for said kingdoms' governance or importance.
