Handelat was by treaty a Fresian city, although with a good deal of Alexian, Flannari, and even Dwarven influences. As the gateway to the former Fresian heartland, it was a major center of commerce as well as a well-fortified free city whose distance from the capital of Achenveltd ensured little direct control. It was occupied by Gildenhome forces during the Calamity and eventually the Dwarves razed much of the city to construct their Grenrhusk River strongholds along the northern run of the river.
