Also known as the Shadow Interregnum, it was a church civil war initiated by the creation of the [[Hegemony]] by [[Martyel Gaddrick-Thane]] after his ascension to [[Arch-Warden]] in 685 FI and ultimately ended with his execution after being psionically forced to name a successor in 690 FI. Although a religious succession war, it is not considered a true interregnum on account of there being a reigning - if widely feared and despised - Arch-Warden for its duration.

The conflict ended calamitously for Fresia. In addition to the decades of rebuilding and unrest that followed, the execution of the Emperor at the hands of the church led to a far weakened emperor and bolder, more autonomous regional Princes and no other Fresian has served as Arch-Warden since.
